Embark on a soul-stirring journey that takes you to five iconic goddess temples of Chandigarh: Chintpurni, Jwala Ji, Brajeshwari Devi, Chamunda Devi and Naina Devi. Each temple has its own significance and history deeply rooted in ancient mythology.

Legends abound about how Shakti Peethas came into existence. The most popular story is based on the story of the death of Goddess Sati according to Hinduism. Shiva picks up Sati’s body, remembering their moments as a couple, and wanders through the universe with her. Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into 51 parts, which fell on the earth and became sacred places where all people could pay homage to the goddess. To complete this task, Shiva took the form of Bhairav.

In Himachal Pradesh, today temples have been built at the place where 5 out of 51 pieces had fallen, people come from far and wide to visit these 5 temples.

  1. Mata Chintpurni Temple – Located in Una district, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Chintapurni, who is considered to be the embodiment of Shakti who removes worries and fears. It is one of the most visited Shaktipeeths in Himachal. The name Chintpurni is derived from two words: “Chint” meaning worry or anxiety, and “Purni” meaning filled or free from. Goddess Chintpurni is believed to be the deity who removes worries and gives peace of mind to her devotees.

  2. Mata Jwala Mukhi Temple – Located in the Kangra Valley, the Jwalamukhi Temple is famous for its natural flame that emanates from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Here the Goddess is worshiped in the form of a continuous flame. The tongue of Sati is believed to have fallen at this location, making it one of the 51 Shaktipeeths.

  3. Brajeshwari Temple – Located in Kangra, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Brajeshwari, another form of Goddess Durga. This temple is an important pilgrimage site for devotees and is associated with the Mahabharata and ancient legends. According to legend, a part of Lord Shiva’s body, her left breast, fell at this place after Lord Shiva’s wife Sati committed self-immolation. Thus, the Brajeshwari Temple is considered one of the 51 Shaktipeeths, the holy places where the body pieces of Sati fell, making it a very important Shakti temple.

  4. Chamunda Devi Temple – Chamunda Devi is an important Shaktipeeth located in Himachal Pradesh, India, and holds an important place in Hindu mythology and spiritual traditions. Chamunda Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda, the fierce and powerful form of Goddess Durga. He is believed to have killed the demons Chanda and Mund, hence his name “Chamunda”. This temple is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the holy places where the body parts of Goddess Sati are believed to have fallen.

  5. Naina Devi Temple – Naina Devi Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in Naina Devi town in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is believed that this temple is built at the place where the eyes of Goddess Sati (Naina) fell after her self-immolation.
